Fuming, or smoking is a wood finishing process which is used to make wooden floors darker and stress the grain pattern. This technique is often applied with respect to oak wood flooring which is treated to make it darker. It consists in exposing a wooden floor to ammonia fumes in enclosed environment. For this purpose a container, a closed tank or a dry kiln can be used to put the wood inside and introduce small amounts of ammonia in the atmosphere. By reacting with the tannins, ammonia changes the shade of wood. Wide Plank:Wide plank flooring refers to floors that use boards which are much wider than the typical148mm” to 189 mm boards used in commercial flooring. A wide plank floor may use boards that are 260mm or more, creating a more striking and distinctive look that allows the grain and the personality of the hardwood to shine through. Wide plank engineered wood flooring is simply engineered hardwood flooring that comes in greater widths.
